| Conejo Valley Chapter Essay Winners |
The February meeting of
the Conejo Valley Chapter was held last Tuesday evening at Saint Francis of
Assisi Episcopal Church in Simi Valley.
After the opening ritual, seven new members were sworn in by Chaplin
Donna McCullough.
We then proceeded to
introduce our DAR American History Essay Winners; 5th Grader Annemarie Ardy from St Patrick's
Day School in Thousand Oaks and
8th Grader Karen Kotas
from Mesa Verde Middle School in Moorpark.
Both students read their excellent essays on the subject of “Forgotten
Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence” to the assembly
of over 60 members, friends and family in attendance.
We then introduced our Chapter
DAR Good Citizen Award Winner, Annie
Hadley from Moorpark High School, who read her essay on the subject of “Our
American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving It.” The focus question was “How are our freedoms
and responsibilities as good citizens changing?” Annie did an outstanding job of addressing
this question from the perspective of a young person in our society. After Annie read her essay and received her
certificate and award from the Conejo Valley Chapter, District Director Nancy
Kilbourn announced that Annie was also the District VIII winner in this
category. Annie is planning to attend Princeton University in the fall.
The winners, their
families, teachers, school principals and members of our chapter then adjourned
to enjoy cake and beverages in the church narthex. Text of the essays will be featured in an
upcoming issue of Conejo Connection for everyone to read.
Thanks to all who
participated. Special thanks to Mary
Schwabauer, Committee Chair, and Judy Hall, Registrar, for all their hard work
in putting together this program.
Daughters, you did a great job!!!
Marilyn Look, Regent
