June Meeting 2013
June 3 brought the Fernanda Maria Chapter to our annual Good
Citizenship and JROTC awards luncheon held at Sharman Borncamp's home as well
as our last meeting of the year. We
honored Cassadra Araujo from James Monroe High School for her outstanding
participation in the JROTC program. 1st
Sgt. Charles Mujica arrived with six cadets from Monroe High to participate in
our theme for the day which was the Flag of the USA.
We retired
an old flag with the help of the cadets who folded the flag and we sang,
"It's a Grand Old Flag" by George M. Cohan for the event. The
Retirement Ceremony began with a prayer led by our Chaplain. It was then turned over
to our Regent who read the history of the flag.
As each cadet and 1st Sgt. Mujica placed a single stripe from the flag
into the fire there was a hush from those daughters present. When the
'field' was finally placed in the fire the solemnity of the occasion remained
until the contents of the container was reduced to ashes. Afterwards, chapter members took the opportunity
to file past the remains of the flag and pay their respects to our "Grand
Old Flag".
It was a beautiful ceremony and one that we will never
forget.
