2008 California C.A.R. State Conference

If you missed the California State Society C.A.R.'s State Conference earlier this month, you missed a good time!

My family and I attended this event, held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Seaside, on February 15-16, 2008, and we saw several other familiar faces while we were there.

Friday night provided an opportunity for the aptly named "seniors" to meet and share news, while the "youngsters" had an indoor beach/pizza party next door. The seniors had to make a few trips next door to swipe trade hors d'oeurves for their much tastier pizza!

On Saturday morning, the C.A.R. members had their annual meeting, which included a memorial service for deceased members, reports of the current officers, campaign speeches for the nominated officers, and an election. We were so proud of the kids who stood in front of an audience and read their reports out loud; this is scary for so many adults, but these kids handled it like pros!

National President, Katie Marie Stanley attended the Conference and was kind enough to stop for a photo with my daughter and me.

Following the meeting, we boarded a bus for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. State President Aimee Clayton presented the Aquarium with a check for $2,000.00, representing funds which were raised through the sale of her sold-out otter pins last year.

The rest of us had fun touring the Aquarium. In addition to otters, we saw dozens of different types of jellyfish, as well as sharks, tuna, and undersea flora. We were disappointed that the Spash Zone was closed for remodeling, but this will give us an excuse to go back another time!

We were "Wild About Otters" this year!

The annual Awards Banquet was held on Saturday evening. The food was delicious (which is a change from most hotel food), and the company was excellent. This meeting included the presentation of awards to societies and individuals, the presentation of gifts to and from the State President, and the installation of new officers.

DAR State Vice Regent Leonora Branca brought greetings at the Awards Banquet.

Our own District VIII C.A.R. Committee Representative, Sharman Borncamp, received the Outstanding Senior Award. Congratulations, Sharman!

Lucas' State President's Project will include the support of Operation Gratitude, a project that we've discussed several times in our District and is supported by the Fernanda Maria Chapter DAR (Operation Gratitude will be featured in our District VIII "spread" in the Daughters Magazine for March/April 2008).

The Senior State Officers for 2008-2010 were installed (yep, that's me in there). Senior State President-Elect Linda Stufflebean (far right) will be installed at the N.S.C.A.R. National Convention in April.

Next year's C.S.S.C.A.R. State Conference will be held on February 20-21, 2009, at the Mission Inn in Riverside. Plan now to bring your family to this wonderful event!
